The Hobbit is set to release the dragon Smaug upon the winter box office. According to Box Office Mojo the second installment of the Peter Jackson epic took in $8.5million in overseas receipts already, and the midnight release in the United States has yet to release a tally.
While the film will have some work to do to catch Katniss and her Hunger Games pals, the appeal of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug should be pretty widespread. I look for this one to play strong through both the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Will it break any records? Hard to say, but I think everything is pretty safe.

The issues I have with this series of movies based on a single book from J.R.R. Tolkien is just that. Since this is not the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the smaller book (could we call it the first prequel??) being split up like this has resulted in a lot of added material. Not the least of which are the vengeance searching pale orc and the entire appearance of Legolas, but I think LOTR fans will let these slide as long as they are well done. Peter Jackson has not really given us any reason to doubt him ~ so far.
So with that I look forward to getting to see The Hobbit number 2, with a keen eye on what is to come in the final film (Since I read the book I have a pretty good idea). Still, Sunday night and Monday morning will reveal a host of truth about the movie with regards to the box office report. No doubt, studio execs and President Snow himself will be checking out the weekend tallies, just to make sure the odds are ever in their favor.
Here’s another taste of the madness coming this weekend:
