You know when John Travolta flubbed the introduction of Idina Menzel at the 2014 Oscars, he probably never envisioned a name generator popping up all over Facebook and other social media sites. Still, it was nice to see Travolta admittingthe mistake and saying he has been beating himself up, according to Yahoo Movies. I enjoyed the whole “Let it Go” reference as well.
Hey, it takes a certain amount of moxie to stand up on stage in front of 40 million U.S. viewers and a crowd full of your peers and get things done without making a mistake. Unfortunately for the “Pulp Fiction” star, his mishap happened before what was probably one of the more anticipated moments of the entire show. Hard to believe that Ellen never made a similar mistake, and she probably has.
Many people have a problem with speaking in public (granted an actor of Travolta’s caliber should be above such things) and his mea culpa should be enough to put the whole thing to bed. Besides, anyone who stayed awake for Menzel’s performance probably knew who she was anyway, and DeGeneres reminded everyone at least twice after the performance.
The bottom line and the curse of live television is that there is not always enough time to eliminate the errors. Travolta might have practiced that intro fifty times (or twice) but it happened and it’s something that will live in Oscar lore. Should Ellen be back in 2015, I would expect everyone to hear more about it, she’s always good for a running gag.
