Ann Coulter has just pulled off the ultimate troll maneuver. In her column published earlier this week, the woman dropped several bombshells of her own on the sport of soccer callingit not a sport and boring among several other interesting quotes. I don’t want to dwell on it but the link goes to the article if you desire to read it.
The USA Today even went so far as to realize that Coulter thinks soccer is un-American and destroying the country, which would probably let everyone sleep a little better. Imagine someone actually solving the problems facing America. It’s not spiraling debt—it’s soccer!
In the end though, Ann Coulter has done exactly what has made her kind-of-famous by crafting an opinion so bizarre and so ridiculous that millions of people have likely clicked over to see what she had to say. And really isn’t earning her paycheck what it’s really about? She could be the Howard Stern of print media in a way, but a lot less entertaining.
Instead of bashing a sport that she knows little about, perhaps she should have congratulated the team. At the core, soccer has never been America’s sport, the rest of the world was leaps and bounds ahead of the United States for decades or more, and now by advancing into the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup the United States National Team has caught up. Yes, the odds of winning the tournament is really slim, but just getting to that level is accomplishment.
Haters got to hate, and strong opinions create hits for a website. Hey, the woman is entitled to her opinion and it just gets amplified being so strong thanks to being a media personality. However, if you only listen to the loudest voice in the room, you are going to be missing out on some very compelling ideas.
